Wireless Wide Area Network (wWAN)
Appropriate Environment: village kiosks that are clustered together within short-distance point-to-point range of each other, in which one or more are directly connected to a Hub.
Approach: FMS Access Points are installed at each kiosk to serve as the wireless interface. Kiosks within direct range of the Hub (Tier 1 kiosks) provide connectivity to Tier 2 kiosks, which may provide connectivity to Tier 3 kiosks as shown in Figure 2 below.
Advantages:
- Enables real-time connectivity
- Less dependent on road transport and human factors
- Broadband
Disadvantages:
- Token-ring constraint: if a lower tier goes down, all higher tiers go down.
- Expertise required to set up and maintain; No “one-size-fits” all solution.
- Efficiency of bandwidth is reduced with each tier.
